A successful myJH sign-in does not mean every Johns Hopkins application will appear immediately on the first row of the portal.
myJH is designed as a resource-discovery environment. Johns Hopkins provides application search, categories, Recommended Tools + Resources and Favorites to help users navigate the hundreds of Hopkins-related resources available through the wider portal environment.
Knowing how those functions differ is especially useful when a user says, “I can get into myJH, but I can’t find my application.”
Search Tools + Resources
The main resource search helps users discover applications used across Johns Hopkins.
Current myJH guidance says the search function can be used for apps and resources and that complete results appear before additional category organization.
This is usually the best first step when a tool is not visible as a tile.
Search for the actual application name or a meaningful task term rather than assuming the homepage is an exhaustive list.
JHED Directory Search Is Different
myJH also exposes the JH Enterprise Directory search.
Johns Hopkins says this search is used to find people, topics and departments in JHED.
This creates two distinct search jobs:
Search Tools + Resources → applications.
JHED directory search → people and organizational information.
Typing a person’s name into an application search or searching for Outlook as though it were a Hopkins employee can naturally produce poor results.
Recommended Tools + Resources
The first row of myJH tiles can contain Recommended Tools + Resources.
Johns Hopkins states that these are frequently used applications curated according to their availability to the individual user.
The phrase “availability to you” is crucial.
myJH serves a broad institutional population.
Different students, faculty, staff and healthcare personnel can require different tools.
So a colleague’s portal is not a guaranteed template for yours.
Favorites
Favorites are user-controlled.
Johns Hopkins says users can add tools and resources to My Favorites, causing those resources to appear prominently in the first row.
This is different from Recommended Tools.
Recommended Tools reflect what the portal surfaces for your account.
Favorites reflect what you personally choose to pin.
An application can still exist even when it appears in neither group initially.
Browse by Category
myJH also supports browsing by resource category.
That becomes useful when you understand the task but do not know the exact product name.
For example, a user looking for an email application can look within messaging-related resources, while a user searching for technology services can browse the relevant category.
Johns Hopkins remote-access documentation specifically directs users to categories such as Messaging and Technology for services including Outlook and VPN.
Why Applications Differ Between Users
Application visibility can be tied to eligibility or role.
Johns Hopkins’ own documentation for adding institutional tiles to myJH states that applications can be targeted using Active Directory group membership and/or JHED attributes.
This provides useful technical context for ordinary users.
A missing resource may reflect the account’s identity attributes or authorization rather than a broken myJH homepage.
Example: Outlook
Hopkins uses Microsoft Exchange for faculty, staff and student email accounts.
Current remote-access instructions tell users to reach Outlook through myJH’s Messaging category.
In that workflow:
myJH discovers the resource.
Authentication verifies the user.
Outlook/Exchange provides the email service.
If Outlook opens but the mailbox itself has a problem, the issue has moved beyond portal navigation.
Example: VPN and MyCloud
The same model applies to remote-access services.
Johns Hopkins says VPN can be reached through myJH’s Technology category, while MyCloud can provide eligible faculty and staff with remote access to applications or a Windows desktop. Both have separate technical prerequisites.
Therefore:
myJH works does not automatically mean VPN works.
A destination application can fail after portal access has succeeded.
Example: Student Information System
Students may use myJH as part of their broader Johns Hopkins digital experience, but SIS owns specialized student transactions.
Current student support documentation directs users to SIS Self-Service for billing, registration and related student-account tasks.
If SIS opens but a registration hold prevents an action, the portal itself is no longer the central issue.
Example: Employee Self Service
For JHU employees, Employee Self Service provides another specialized destination.
Johns Hopkins HR describes ESS as the place for personal/payroll information including direct deposit, tax withholding and pay statements.
Again, myJH can help connect a user with institutional technology without owning the payroll record itself.
What to Do When an Application Is Missing
Use a task-based sequence.
1. Search
Use Search Tools + Resources.
2. Check the Current Name
Institutional tools can be renamed or reorganized.
3. Browse the Relevant Category
This can surface resources whose formal product name you do not know.
4. Confirm Eligibility
Ask whether the resource is intended for your Hopkins role.
5. Compare With a Similar User
Compare with someone in the same school, department or role—not simply any person at Johns Hopkins.
6. Escalate Provisioning Questions
If the application should be available but cannot be found, Johns Hopkins support may need to inspect your account.
Do Not Reset Credentials for Every Missing Application
If you can already authenticate into myJH, your JHED credentials have successfully passed a major part of the process.
A missing tile after authentication therefore may concern application availability rather than password validity.
Resetting a working password can add unnecessary complexity.
The Best Mental Model
Think of myJH as a router:
Search finds resources.
Recommended Tools surfaces likely resources.
Favorites stores your own shortcuts.
Categories organize the catalog.
JHED search finds people and departments.
Individual applications perform the actual specialized work.
That model makes the portal substantially easier to navigate.
